Objective
The risk of exclusion is high for young people in care who have inadequate qualifications and social and emotional difficulties. Vocational schools and social agencies have developed preventative strategies, but these are typically service-centred and the results are frequently disappointing. New initiatives are required. This project seeks to examine learning needs and care from a therapeutic, socio-cultural perspective as a means to developing personalised training programmes designed to better prepare young persons at risk for independent living and working.
Partners will exchange and compare information on ways of dealing with social problems and exclusion of young persons in vocational training from a best practice approach. Two programmes will be developed in parallel from this. Study modules for social and care workers will be developed, focusing on areas including: social and cultural changes affecting child protection work; assessing skills and skills requirements for independent living; child protection methods, such as video home training, therapeutic crisis intervention, for example, and on-and-off-the job training and the learning process. A programme for preparing young persons for training, employment and independent living will also be developed in cooperation with child protection and training establishments. The workbook method will be used in conjunction with this programme.
Impact
The project will enable young care leavers to acquire skills for better coping in adult life. The development of new methods in social and care work will lead to improved skills for addressing the problems of disadvantaged young persons.
