MANAGEMENT AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES

Obiettivo

Industrial competitiveness has, to an increasing degree, become dependent upon timely and well-judged adoption of new technologies, with respect both to production processes and to products. This general tendency is evident in all industries owing to pervasive effects of, for example, information technology, biotechnology, and technologies yielding new materials.

It is now widely accepted that contemporary technological changes can only be implemented successfully if they are accompanied by appropriate organisational and motivational/attitudinal changes. New management structures, new systems of employee participation and involvement, and new approaches to work organisation have been widely proposed, and in some cases have been the subject of considerable experimentation and/or implementation.

The central aim of this COST Action is to link the analysis of organisations with the implementation of new technologies, as strategic elements in enterprise adaptation. The programme aims to bring together on a European scale a wide range of theory-based empirical research that can identify, illuminate and describe problems and new themes of research, and offer solutions to identified problems.

Current status

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

The Action has been in operation for five years; it terminated on 17 September 1996.

During the reporting period the most important subjects dealt with were :

- the process of design in relation to new technology,

- the strategic management of new technology,

- the management and use of networks between specialists and between firms in the development of new technology.

The University of Groningen (H) administered a programme of Short-Term Scientific Missions for the Action that has led to a fruitful information exchange between young scientists from participating countries.


Work planned

No further work is planned under this Action, since it terminated in September 1996. However, the MC agreed to prepare a proposal for a new Action relating to the subjects of innovation, organisational learning and management knowledge. In addition, individual scientists from the network will apply for Commission funding of projects in this areas from the Framework Programme.
