Obiettivo
The objective of ASSIM is to provide a broad situation audit of the economic, social and technological implications of language diversity in Europe. To this end the study will collate macro-economic data, broken down by countries, target groups and types of services, and assess the nature, extent and trends of the language services market in all countries of the European Economic Area (EEA), namely: Austria, Germany, Italy; Greece, Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, United Kingdom, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
The study comprises two main research areas:
- Assessment of the translation and interpretation market
- Assessment and monitoring of the market for multilingual tools and services
It includes the following main tasks:
- designing a methodology for surveying and measuring the social and economic impact of multilingualism both in the public and private sector
- assessing and monitoring the translation and interpretation market from both the supply and demand side, as well as the secondary market of services and products which support the translation and interpretation industry
- assessing the capability of citizens to access and exchange information via networks in the language of their choice
- assessing and monitoring the market of multilingual tools and services, including language coverage, gaps and needs for multilingual services in Europe
- identifying trends and future developments, including entrepreneurial and employment opportunities
- documenting the results of the research and forward recommendations for actions in the field of multilingualism in Europe.
The study is split into four stages spanning over an overall time frame of 30 months. This includes a preparation phase and an implementation phase, which in turn is split into three cycles comprising an initial market sizing study, a dissemination phase and an update study.
The results of the research will be disseminated amongst representative associations from the translation and interpretation industry, providers of language services and tools and decision makers in this area in the public and private sector.
The European Union has a long-standing commitment to linguistic diversity and multilingual communication. However the rich texture of multilingualism is not well documented; a better and more systematic understanding is needed, both to assess the social relevance and to measure the economic impact of the language services market in Europe.
