Cel The research programme that we have already engaged tests the hypothesis that river margin ecosystems are more sensitive to environmental changes than the adjacent aquatic or terrestrial ecosystems. River margin ecosystems are recognized as dynamic interface where biological processes and biodiversity tend to be maximized. The study is currently based on the comparison of biological processes, i.e. plant colonization, litter decomposition and denitrification, occurring in 5 river systems along a latitudinal gradient from Northern Sweden to Southern France. However most of the large West European rivers, including the ones we have chosen, are strongly anthropized. Moreover we still lack the consideration of the effect of the continental climate, widely represented in Europe, and of major influence on the river margin functioning. The opportunity to include Some East European teams would greatly enhance: our project perspectives in this respect. For these reasons we decided to select research teams working on the Danube River, the largest european river offering extended riparian zones and influenced bY a large range of climates along its course. Among the six proposals from Eastern Europe, the two teams selected have been working on the Danube River for several years. The Romanian laboratory from the University of Bucharest (Pr Vadineanu) has been chosen as first because: (1) the lower reach of the Danube River on which the team is working presents the largest and most natural riparian zones, (2) We had already some fruitful scientific collaboration in the past. The Hungarian laboratory from Budapest (Dr Perényi) studying the middle reach of the Danube River which also presents some interesting features has been chosen as second. The addition of these two sites would help tremendously in the success of the ERMAS project.
