Development of Biological Dosimetry systems for monitoring the impact of solar UVB radiation on the biosphere and human health

Obiettivo

It is the aim of the project, to develop and calibrate reliable field dosimetry systems for monitoring environmental UV radiation based on complementary biological UV dosimeters. The first objective is to characterise existing biological UV dosimeters according to a standard protocol. The second objective is to improve available biological UV dosimeters to better fulfil the requirements for field measurements of the biologically effective irradiance, Eeff, for different key targets. The third objective is to develop biological field dosimetry systems based on the most suitable and complementary biological dosimeters. Special attention will be placed upon the dosimetric quantity for Eeff which should be based on the SI system and allow comparison of predicted data with those that have been biologically determined. In field and laboratory intercomparison campaigns the biological dosimetry systems will be compared and calibrated with spectroradiometric-based measurements. Adaptations of the biological dosimetry systems for the special requirements of personal dosimetry, underwater dosimetry, and field measurements in deserts or high mountains will be developed. First field measurements will be conducted and standard protocols will be elaborated for the different field uses of the biological dosimetry systems.

The biological dosimeters will be prepared, exposed and analysed according to standard biological and
dosimetric protocols. For their characterisation, action spectroscopy will be applied using monochromatic and
polychromatic UV-radiation. The quality of the biological dosimeters will be assessed during two field
intercomparisons in combination with spectroradiometers. Expected values, obtained from the multiplication of
the spectral data with the relevant action spectra, will be compared with the experimentally determined data.
At first, a catalogue of criteria for reliable biological UV dosimetry will be established and current systems will
be comprehensively reviewed according to this catalogue. The most suitable systems will then be selected and
further characterised and calibrated according to a standard protocol. This process includes the improvement
of existing and the development of new biological dosimeters. Field dosimetry systems composed of
complementary biological dosimeters will be developed for adaptations to the special requirements, such as
personal dosimetry, underwater dosimetry, or field measurements in deserts or high mountains. In field and
laboratory intercomparison campaigns the individual biological dosimeters as well as the biological dosimetry
systems will be intercompared and calibrated with
spectroradiometric-based measurements. First field
measurements at selected sites will be conducted and standard protocols will be elaborated for the different field
uses of the biological dosimetry systems.
