Development of an advanced burial technology integrating biological systems for air purifiaction and enhanced biodecomposition leading to reduced harmful emissions into the environment

Obiettivo

Burial technologies are very much depending on cultural backgrounds, but cemeteries throughout Europe face the same probleme of shortage in space and high costs. The problem is, that after the legal lay times (between 5 15 years depending on national rules), the buried coffins, the dead bodies and especially the coffin inlays (textiles etc.) are not decomposed completely. As a result, the remains have to be exhuminated and reburied. In addition, not much is known about the effects, the decomposition process has on the environment. Potential risks can be in the gaseous emissions, liquids etc. as well as from the microbiology involved (fungal spores). Even for advanced burial technologies like aerated grave chambers, insufficient data are recorded. The proposal aims at the development of burial technologies, that promote an enhanced biodecomposition of all buried components (coffin, textiles, bodies) and at the same time climate environmental and hygenic hazards. This will be reached by the combination of latest advanced burial systems (patented by the SME proposers) with specific biologically active matrices to hygenize and biodegrade potentially hazardous emissions. The proposed research will help to identify and climate negative environmental effects of today's burial technologies. In addition it will make cemetery management more cost effective and, at the same time, help urban structures to be more in accordance to the idea of sustainable development. i The SMEs involved are manufacturers of advanced burial technologies. Their interest is, to include biological systems for further improvement of the decomposition process, to identify better, environmentally friendly materials to be used and to find concepts that will help this industrial sector to come up with new and more cornpetetive solutions.
