Earth observation for grassland, shrubland and woodland biomass estimate and management

Obiettivo

The projects aims at defining and mapping vegetation distribution and estimating the related biomass by means of Earth Observation data in three different European test areas. The final goal is to support different activities concerning customer's duties in terms of land management. The three test sites are characterised by a great biodiversity and represented by two national parks and one protected area located in mediterranean and in the northern Europe respectively. During the project life cycle, a system for processing EO data relative to areas covered by vegetation will be developed in order to obtain digital maps of vegetation distribution and of estimated biomass.
Traditional sampling techniques for estimating vegetation variables, based on the field data collection, are time consuming and destructive and require considerable human and economic resources. From an operational point of view, the 'in situ' data are often not sufficient for the effective territorial planning and monitoring. An alternative approach is remote sensing which has the advantage of not being destructive while still permitting a large-scale evaluation at lower costs.
In order to develop the most appropriate procedures to generate suitable vegetation index for defining the vegetation distribution and biomass, the consortium will process multispectral and radar images during a one-year period. Landsat TM optical data represent the reflectance of sensed area in 7 bands covering optical spectrum as well as near and thermal infrared and in this context will be used for classification purposes. The radar equipped ERS satellites will provide supplementary data irrespective of cloud conditions and daylight. Simultaneously, the ground measurements will be obtained through the on site data collections to validate satellite based estimates.
The digital maps will be used by the customers involved in the project according to their different needs:
CUSTOMER 1 (a National Park Management Office) must insure the rational use of land (grassland and forest management) and its preservation in compliance with the presence of domestic and wild grazing animals and improve their interaction with rural communities.
CUSTOMER 2 (a Conservancy Area Association) is in charge of optimising the extensive animal husbandry system and game management in semi-natural grassland and shrubland of less favoured areas, while favouring enviromental preservation.
CUSTOMER 3 (a Research Institute operating on the territory of a National Park) intends to use the phytoclimatic characterisation and the related biomass estimate for the evaluation of biomass energy production potential.
Validation of the system will allow the customers to insert EO data into their decision processes. It is expected that EO will prove to be valuable and an effective contribution for land management.
