Development of optical remote sensing instruments for volcanological applications

Obiettivo

Volcanic emission significantly contributes to the global source of several atmospheric gases and aerosols. Measurements of volcanic gas fluxes yield vital information on magmatic conditions and processes; also they are important parameters for hazard assessment and risk mitigation. This project aims to develop robust and reliable optical remote sensing instruments and measurement strategies for surveillance of volcanic emissions of SO2, halogen species (and possibly CO2 and H2O) with high time resolution (1-5 min.) and to test and demonstrate their use in field experiments (Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat, and Mount Etna, Italy). Spectroscopic methods allow remote, non-invasive, quantitative multi-component observations. Building on recent advances in passive remote sensing techniques, new monitoring capabilities for remote and automated measurement of volcanic gas fluxes by various novel techniques including tomographic approaches will be developed.
