Continental slope stability

Obiettivo

Problems to be solved
The main objective of the COSTA project is the assessment of continental slope stability along the European Continental Margin with respect to natural processes and human activity. Progress in resolving these major issues are to be achieved through the examination of
(i) sediment failures from prehistoric to recent times, (ii) areas prone to sliding, and
(iii) potential areas of deep-water oil & gas exploration in co-operation with industry. The frequency and magnitude of slope failures are to be quantified, as they effect marine ecosystems, man-made structures and continental coastlines, shelves and slopes. Potential triggers such as gas hydrates slip planes and sediment-flow dynamics are to be studied on glaciated-dominated (N Atlantic) as well as river-dominated (W Mediterranean) margins, and small- versus medium- versus mega scale slides. This also will lay the foundation for a systematic advancement in our ability to predict risks inherent in continental slopes.
Scientific objectives and approach
COSTA will advance the safety standards in margin and slope areas. The results culminate in 6 major reports:
(1) Event and impact stratigraphy (EIS);
(2) slope failure architecture and slip plane geometry;
(3) Seabed stress condition;
(4) Gas hydrate reservoir characteristic;
(5) Numerical model of slope failures, and
(6) Integrated risk analysis of slope stability. This will improve sustainable development and predictive capabilities for an assessment of continental slope stability. COSTA encompasses up to 15 research cruises of 18 oil and gas companies active in deep-water hydrocarbon exploration and production. In co-operation with this consortium COSTA can provide leading training and educational opportunities for students to meet the linkages between Earth Sciences, Hydrocarbon Industry and Environmental concerns of the society. Furthermore an ODP drilling proposal targets deeper sections of slope failures on the European Margin.
Expected impacts
COSTA will strongly interact with the project STRATAGEM, and with the projects ECOMOUND, GEOMOUND and ACES. Such co-operation may also form the ground for relevant and harmonic clustering initiatives for a EUROMARGIN within the 5th framework programme. COSTA is also co-operating with 4 Joint Industry Projects (JIPs) that represent 27 European oil companies, which are represented by the SEABED project in Norway, GEM Network in the Faeroes, WFA in the UK and PIP in Ireland. During the academia workshops nominated representatives of the whole hydrocarbon industry in Europe will be present to interact with the project.

Campo scientifico (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifica i progetti con EuroSciVoc, una tassonomia multilingue dei campi scientifici, attraverso un processo semi-automatico basato su tecniche NLP. Cfr.: https://op.europa.eu/it/web/eu-vocabularies/euroscivoc.

Programma(i)

Programmi di finanziamento pluriennali che definiscono le priorità dell’UE in materia di ricerca e innovazione.

Argomento(i)

Invito a presentare proposte

Procedura per invitare i candidati a presentare proposte di progetti, con l’obiettivo di ricevere finanziamenti dall’UE.
