The principal achievements during the period of the contract have been:
i) the release of version 93/1 and the finalisation of version 95/1 of COSYMA,
ii) the release of the first version of PC COSYMA, and the preparation of the second version for release in 1995,
iii) the coordination of the COSYMA User Group, and the organisation of its first and second meetings,
iv) an additional economics module for COSYMA, incorporating the MECA2 model and a new model for the analysis of the effects of a nuclear accident on the economic variables of the directly affected and surrounding areas.
The MARIA (Methods for Assessing the Radiological Impact of Accidents) project was initiated by CEC in 1983. The aim of the project is to further develop methods and models for accident consequence assessment (ACA) within the EC and to develop and distribute the COSYMA computer system for carrying out probabilistic accident consequence assessments.
Although sufficient knowledge and experience has now been gained for adequate results to be determined for many ACA applications, further research and effort is still required in a number of areas. These areas include (a) the continued maintenance, support and development of the COSYMA system, (b) the continued development of a PC version of the COSYMA system, to allow non-expert users to undertake ACA studies without access to large computer resources, (c) participation of the COSYMA system in the CEC/NEA ACA code intercomparison exercise, and documentation of the results and (d) further work on the development of techniques for assessing economic impact.
It is proposed that four organisations participate in this project; NRPB (UK), KfK (FRG), the polytechnical University of Madrid (Spain), and KEMA (Netherlands). The maintenance, support and development of the full COSYMA system will be undertaken predominantly by KfK with assistance from NRPB. However, KfK and the polytechnical University of Madrid will collaborate on the incorporation of the MECA economics model into the COSYMA code. The further development of a PC version of the COSYMA system will be undertaken predominantly at NRPB with assistance from KfK. The participation of the COSYMA system in the CEC/NEA ACA code intercomparison exercise, and documentation of the results will be led by KEMA, with assistance and cooperation from the other participants. The further work on the development of techniques for assessing economic impact will be undertaken primarily at the Polytechnical University of Madrid, with assistance and discussion with KfK and NRPB as necessary.
