Obiettivo Research objectives and content During the past years a revolution has taken place in string theory. It has been realised that all perturbative string theories can, in various limits and compactifications, be obtained from one fundamental theory in eleven dimensions. This theory is known as M-theory. It is still incompletely understood, and only a few aspects of the full theory are known. I hope to participate in the efforts to unravel the mysteries of M-theory. A natural starting point being the M(atrix) theory proposal. The structure of the low energy effective action of M-theory also merits further investigation. Another objective is the continuation of the study of four-dimensional heterotic string theories obtained by compactifying M-theory. These theories are expected to be of relevance for addressing phenomenological questions. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) I believe that a stay at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge will be very fruitful. I hope to be able to benefit from the expertise of the department.
