New materials, adaptive systems and their nonlinearities modelling, control and numerical simulation

Obiettivo

The project aims at providing training of researchers in the industrially very active field of new materials and adaptive systems. "New materials " is used here as a generic term for " functional " materials whose physical or chemical properties are used in the design of control elements yielding smart systems. The scientific objectives of the research are to develop efficient mathematical methods and numerical tools for modeling, control and numerical simulation to improve the understanding of the behavior of these new systems, including their inherent nonlinearities.
1. Modeling. Smart materials exhibit mechanical deformations in response to apply electric or magnetic fields, and conversely can produce dielectric polarization in response to strain. There can also be changes in the rheological behavior induced by electric field or phase shifts when temperature varies. The investigations in this field of consist in the modeling of these coupling effects, of new composite structures (with their nonlinearities: hysteresis, contact, cracks, in view of damage detection) and the associated time-dependent equations.
2. Optimization and Control. Adaptive structures are self-controlled mechanisms: strain and electrical or magnetic field couplings are exploited to provide built in feedback control. The investigations concern theoretical questions on exact controllability, stabilization, active, passive, hybrid vibration control, optimal shape design, and practical questions about robustness and accuracy of the control and design systems.
3. Numerical Simulation. Adaptive systems offer now real-time capability; hence it is essential to define new robust and efficient computational methods to achieve reliable simulation. Two kinds of developments are planned: conception of appropriate tools (adaptive meshes, bubbles, subgrids, spill-over, locking-free elements), and developments for applications (design of micro-systems, biomechanics, nonlinear dynamic
