Svekalpko Deep Seismics

Cel

During the winter-spring of 1998-99 a large number of mobile seismological stations will be deployed in and around Finland. These will monitor seismological signals from teleseismic, local and regional events. This data will then be analysed to reveal the very deep structure of below the area of study. With INTAS funding, exiting Russian equipment will be upgraded, and new equipment acquired, and also with the help of this INTAS application, Western stations which would otherwise be placed in Finland will be deployed in Northern Russia.
The data will be analysed using P- and S-wave tomographic inversion, surface wave analyses, and waveform techniques methods including shear wave splitting and receiver function analyses. After initial separate analyses, data and results from the different analysis techniques will be combined to produce the best possible seismological models of the area. These data will then be interpreted in conjunction with other geophysical and geological data to produce a model for the large-scale evolution of the SVEKALAPKO area. With funding from this INTAS application, the groups from Moscow and Apatity will be able to fully participate in these studies.
