ParcelCall - An Open Architecture for Intelligent Tracing Solutions in Transport and Logistics

Obiettivo

ParcelCall will develop and verify an open architecture for intelligent tracking and tracing in transport and logistics. New network technologies will be combined with advanced sensors and innovative service engineering. ParcelCall provides a generic answer to a range of similar applications in other areas (health care, emergency services, surveillance, etc.). Its consortium covers all key competencies: leading edge users, software developers, equipment manufacturers, and research. The project work builds on the state of the art and develops specific answers to overcome key constraints for the realisation of the objectives in an open system approach. This relates specifically to seamless integration for intermodal transport, use of active sensors, and intelligent sensor networks.

Objectives:
The objective of ParcelCall is to realise an intelligent end-to-end tracking and tracing solution across all boarders of carrier and transportation modes. It will optimally draw on emerging technologies, e.g. Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, and public communication networks (Internet and GPRS) to develop the system and trial the application in a realistic business context. Standard mobile phones will be used, any time and anywhere, to get near real-time tracing information along the complete logistic chain. The approach distinguishes three levels with increasing performance, flexibility, and scalability. Firstly, development of an open tracking and tracing architecture across the complete logistic chain. Secondly, integration of active sensors, providing the means to monitor and control environmental conditions and quality status of transport goods. Finally, incorporation of communicating sensors providing alert messages directly to the goods owner if environmental conditions deviate from their default ranges.

Work description:
The ParcelCall project is driven by two scenarios, 2003 and 2008. In scenario 2003, cheap RFID tags are attached to individual transport items. Static information like identity, sender, and destination address is transmitted to an RFID reader upon transhipping. In scenario 2008, RFID tags are combined with active sensors to measure environmental data like temperature, humidity, or acceleration. Independently of transportation mode or carrier the ParcelCall system can notify a freight owner when unexpected conditions occur. Such properties are achieved by building a distributed system, where the constituents are the intelligent packet objects that communicate with each other and with the backbone system via invocation messages. More advanced, economically-suited networks will contribute to the communication subsystem such as Bluetooth for short-range and GPRS or UMTS for long-range communication. System Architecture Design work establishes the framework within which the overall system architecture design, evaluation of prospects, system evolution, and contribution to the international standardisation process is done. The Future of Tagging and Tracing part of the project develops and implements an item-based communication system using Thinking Tags. An application prototype will be developed to verify the advanced system concept. The implementation of the pen architecture implements the specified architecture with its open API's based on the requirements identified. The System Trial and Evaluation develops the detailed plan for a pan-European system trial. The evaluation of the trial and its future prospects are assessed.

Milestones:
Based on requirements from postal, express, and air cargo carriers, an open architecture will be developed and a standardisation proposal will be issued. The architecture will be implemented and verified in a system trial. Hardware and software prototypes of Thinking Tags and active alerting services will be developed and integrated.
