Obiettivo
The flow of component information from component manufacturers to users is important for the cost effectiveness of product development. MERCI will build a commercial service agency to support this information flow. The service agency will use standards (P-Lib, IEC61360, PCIS) and make them interoperable. It will support the transformation from data sheets and legacy data into the standard formats and from standard formats into libraries of CAD systems. Beside other services, it will also allow electronic commerce of components.
In parallel activities,
(1) the software infrastructure will be developed based on standard software and software of partners,
(2) the service agency will be installed and maintained, and
(3) services will be validated in pilot applications.
MERCI will organise an Industrial Interest Group with early access to the services. Its feedback and requirements will influence the final set up of the service agency.
Objectives:
The flow of component information from component manufacturers to users is important for the cost effectiveness of product development. MERCI will build a commercial service agency and the required underlying software infrastructure to facilitate this information flow. The service agency will use standards (P-Lib, IEC61360, PCIS) and make them interoperable. It will support the transformation from data sheets and legacy data into the standard formats and from standard formats into libraries of CAD systems. By mechanisms for the exchange of change information and the electronic commerce of components, it will strengthen the supplier-customer relationships. Particularly SMEs will get more independent of big component manufacturers by the neutral service agency. MERCI will continue the strong European role in the area of component information management standards (P-Lib, IEC61360) and implementations (CIREP project).
Work description:
The project will perform its work in three overlapping activity lines:
(1) development of the software infrastructure,
(2) set up of the service agency and pilot applications, and
(3) information dissemination and feedback of requirements.
Particular important will be the organisation of an Industrial Interest Group (IIG). It will function as the primary customer base of the project, get early and inexpensive access to the services and will take part in pilot applications. The feedback of the evaluations and the requirements defined by the IIG will influence the direction of the software development and service provision.
The project will be organised in three phases (after a short initial phase). Within a phase, the activity lines overlap: Software development starts, after some months, first results will be transferred to the service agency, and shortly thereafter, the services will be extended, validated in pilot applications and offered to the IIG. The requirements collected in the IIG will flow back to service agency and software development and will influence the planning for the following phase.
Phase 1 will develop an initial service demonstration mainly based on already existing software of the project partners.
In phase 2, the service agency will be fully set up providing the exchange of component information in all standard formats and transformations between the formats. Manufacturers get support in importing their existing component information into the standards and the MERCI database, and end users are provided with search facilities and transformation services to download the data into their CAD systems.
In phase 3, the service agency will be improved and extended by mechanisms for change management and electronic commerce, and the commercialisation of the service after the end of the project will be prepared.
Milestones:
Each project phase is started with a specification milestone where the software and services for the next phase are planned, and it is finished with an evaluation milestone where the results of the previous phase are evaluated. At the end of the project, the service agency will be set up. The project clearly focuses on the commercialisation of the service agency: If it should not be possible to present a convincing business plan after the first year, the consortium will stop the project.
1. Specification of coatings, test methods, test end-points and an environmental impact study.
2. Manufacture of samples and configuration of test equipment.
3. Manufacture and screening of treatments and coatings.
4. Environmental impact assessment of coatings and methods of production.
5. Screening of coatings for critical properties.
6. Evaluation and optimisation of coatings in pilot plant
7. End user application trials on real components.
8. Draft procedures, quality manual and cost estimates.
