AgentLink II: Continuation of a Network of Excellence for Agent-Based Computing

Obiettivo

AgentLink-II will act as the focal point of European R&D activity for the area of agent-based computing, an emerging area of IT concerned with systems composed of one or more semi-autonomous computer systems known as agents. AgentLink-II is proposed as a follow on to AgentLink, the enormously successful Network of Excellence established in May 1998. As with its predecessor, the ultimate goals of AgentLink-II are to put European industry and research at the forefront of innovation and excellence in this increasingly important area. To this end, AgentLink-II will carry out a programme of industrial action, research coordination, teaching and training, and communication/awareness activities.

OBJECTIVES
The long-term objective of AgentLink-II is to put Europe at the leading edge of international competitiveness in the area of agent-based computing. The medium term goals of AgentLink-II are to gain competitive advantage for European industry by promoting and raising awareness of agent systems technology; to facilitate improvement in the standard, profile, and industrial relevance of European research in the area of agent-based computer systems; to promote excellence of teaching and training in the area of agent-based systems; to provide a widely known, high-quality European forum in which current issues, problems, and solutions in the research and development of agent-based computer systems may be debated and resolved.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
AgentLink-II will build on the enormous success of AgentLink by:
- iteratively developing a high-quality 'technological roadmap', which sets out a vision for the future and potential of agent technology; actively promoting awareness of agent research and development activities within European industry, through an industrial awareness programme; encouraging technology transfer from academia to industry, by supporting industrial-academic meetings and pump-priming technology transfer collaborations; promoting the adoption of standards and the awareness of standardisation activities in the area of agent technology; providing support for innovative, high-quality conferences and workshops related to agent systems R&D; creating a pan-European infrastructure for teaching and training in the area of agent-based systems; establishing regular, high-quality channels of communication in research, technology, and application aspects of agent-based systems, including a dedicated WWW site, email list, and regular newsletter. Experience with AgentLink demonstrates that this programme will clearly achieve the medium term goals of AgentLink-II, and represents a sound and pragmatic first step towards the long term network goals.
