Total Information Sharing for Pilot Situational Awareness Enhanced by Intelligent Systems

Ziel

The Total Information Sharing for Pilot Situational Awareness Enhanced by Intelligent Systems (TALIS) is a 5th Framework proposal from the TALIS consortium headed by the EUROCONTROL Experimental Centre (EEC). TALIS makes an innovative approach to contribute to the improvements of efficiency and safety of the overall air traffic system. TALIS proposes state-of-the-art technological solutions to further strengthen the pilots' decision role, in supplying him/her with ambient intelligence through total information sharing. TALIS will also address the role of standards and of avionics certification issues, to improve the service available to European citizens.

Objectives:
TALIS proposes a study to investigate the viability and benefits of adopting an approach based on standardised architectures to provide for pilot situational awareness resulting in a safer and more efficient air traffic management process involving interactions between the ground and the air, to bring benefits to the travelling public and to enhance the competitiveness of European industry. Further objectives are to (i) specify applications within a standardised ground-based and commercially available architectures to provide for efficient operations within the cockpit as part of the concept for gate-to-gate operations; (ii) undertake activities to validate the proposed approach; (iii) investigate the issues associated with certification of the proposed architectures; (iv) report on the validated approach with identification of the role of standards within the overall architecture.

Work description:
TALIS work can be sub-devised into three logical streams:
1. The federated architecture, which will result in a generic and open architecture, on which the TALIS applications will be built. Validation reports will be produced with the help of a validation platform, and industrial pre-standards will be developed.
2. The intelligent pilot assistance applications, which will result in the different application validation reports, and software components for the validation platform. These applications are:
2.1 Traffic Information Services with additional browsing capabilities. This will enable the pilot to see surrounding objects on a display, with traffic like other aircraft and vehicles, airport and airspace information. The pilot can then retrieve additional information about these objects, e.g. flight plans, slots, runway info etc. That can be achieved with both, automatic intelligence that will retrieve the right information at the right time depending on the context of the aircraft, or manually by browsing on the object.
2.2 Critical Weather Information Update Service.
3. The avionics certification issues, which will result in several reports on issues concerning avionics certification, i.e. the analysis report for use of commercial-off-the-shelf in the cockpit, a report on the production chain and tools, a certification report and an airborne architecture report. To achieve this work, the TALIS work has been organised in two phases.

The 1st phase is this proposal, which has been broken down into the following work packages:
WP 1 Project Management
WP 2 High Level System Requirements
WP 3 Federated Architecture
WP 4 Critical Weather Information Update and Traffic Information Service
WP 5 Avionics Certification

Milestones:
WP1 - Month 24: Final report and organisation of user forum;
WP2 - Month 15: Documentation of the foundation architecture;
WP3 - Month 15: Federated Architecture documentation and software; Month 23: TALIS Standards
WP4 - Month 23: Critical Weather Information Update and Traffic Information Service documentation and software
WP5 - Month 23: Two Certification Issues Reports
