Configuration in Industrial Product Families

Obiettivo

The project will define and validate a product derivation methodology that is practicable in industrial application. The consortium, which consists of two industrial partners and academic partners specialising in software architecture and artificial intelligence, intends to use both the product line approach and structure-oriented configuration technologies. The methodology will be developed top-down, starting from requirements defined through case studies of the industrial partners and will be validated through application.

The project lasts 36 months and is divided into the following phases: investigation (6 months), definition (9 months), trial (15months) and assessment (6 months). The configuration approach used by the methodology optimises reuse strategies in application engineering, which alleviates a deficit in other product line approaches. The consortium intends to document the methodology in a book published at the end of the project.

Objectives:
The project has the following sub-objectives: to use separate benefit feature and artefact models and to develop intermediate knowledge representations to connect them; to validate the methodology with industrial-scale applications; to define a configuration notation that has the expressiveness to handle the variability endemic in industrial product lines and to define strategies to maximise the reuse of available generic software components.

Work description:
The work is divided into two main streams: methodological and experimental, primarily being carried out by the academic and industrial partners, respectively. Both streams follow the same phases in approximately the same time frame.

In the investigation phase, the factors driving the configuration process of the industrial partners will be determined and documented in case studies to better understand the detailed problems and issues existing in the industrial, rather than laboratory environments. On the one hand, these results will be used to define and judge the methodology being developed. On the other hand, they will be used as input for preparing for the experiments. The industrial partners will define the scope of the product line used in the experiment.

In the definition phase, the academic partners will cooperate to define an integrated methodology based on the results of these studies, the methodology will consist of a set of techniques and a set of representations. The industrial partners will prepare for the experimental phase. In addition, tool support specific to the partner will be identified and developed.

In the experimental phase, the methodology will be validated through trials at the industrial partners. The experimental sites will be prepared and then the experiments will be performed. As part of these experiments, the developed methodology, technique set and representation may be adapted to the specific needs of the partners. Data collected during the experiments will be analysed to validate the results. The academic partners will monitor the progress of the experiments to ensure conformity to the methodology and to identify problems with the methodology.

In the assessment phase, the experience will be documented and the results compared to what was expected in the methodology definition phase. Based on this, we can disseminate the project results and, where possible, exploit these results outside the consortium.

Milestones:
M1: Investigation Results (Month 6);
M2: Definition Results(Month 15);
M3: Trial Results (Month 30);
M4: Dissemination Package (Month 36).
