Vehicle e-safety architecture

Obiettivo

To improve traffic safety, future cars and vehicles will be equipped with integrated safety systems, which assist the driver in dangerous traffic situations. Today, every vehicle manufacturer (OEM) develops these systems on its own leading to OEM-specific frameworks for software and communication interfaces, and related tool-environments. For system suppliers this means that they are dealing with a wide range of incompatible OEM-specific solutions, hindering the wide-spread introduction of integrated safety functions. To enable the introduction of integrated safety systems, those elements which are not relevant with respect to OEM competitiveness have to be standardised. Sharing aspects of a common architecture in this way will facilitate the introduction and the dissemination of future integrated safety functions.

Work description:
At the beginning system analysis has to be performed leading to overall requirements with respect to fault-tolerance and safety. Based on this results the requirements of an open architecture, enabling hardware and software interoperability, will be elaborated. A major challenge for the future is the establishment of a harmonised certification process for such systems. The VEESA study will analyse existing certification methods and processes regarding their suitability in respect of future safety and reliability requirements. A workplan on how to achieve a harmonised system certification will be defined. One emphasis of the activities in VEESA is the evaluation of recommendations for future RTD activities in the field of fault-tolerant Middleware for safety critical applications. Missing links will be identified and measures to fill up gaps will be proposed. Goals for research programmes will be elaborated. The requirement analysis concerning Middleware, tools and certification process will be transferred into a work programme with defined tasks and responsibilities. Since standardization is one of the key items a broad number of OEMs, system suppliers and SMEs, like tool developers will be contacted and involved.

Milestones:
Preliminary system requirements: Functional description of a chassis control system Detailed Summary of requirements for the realisation of fault-tolerant Middleware for chassis and power train system: a) technical: to do list, b) organisational: identification of action items and partners needed to realise. Detailed workplan how to achieve a harmonised system certification process. Recommendations for FP6 and Workprogramme to realise necessary back bone of next generation e-safety cars.
