FRUIT JUICE ANALYSIS

Obiettivo

A number of physical and chemical measurements are used for controlling the commercial quality of fruit juice and related products. Definition and specification of fruit juice are subject to EEC Directives (75/726/EEC as amended). Some aspects which are not covered by Directives are subject to national regulations which, unfortunately, tend to differ. This situation adds further trade difficulties to those which arise from differences in the results of measurements even when standardized methods are used, e.g. nitrate determination.
For these reasons, the Fruit Juice Trade Associations have requested that the BCR program organizes intercomparisons of methods at Community level and develops, if necessary, appropriate reference materials.
Results of the work may be used by the CEN (European Committee for Standardization) which is currently issuing norms in this field.

STATUS

The project progressed by steps involving three intercomparisons covering major inorganic elements, major organic compounds and amino acids.
The production of a freeze dried orange juice reference material has been shown to be feasible and the production of a final batch will be completed in 1992.
