COLD CHAMBER (SOLAR) FOR FUITS AND VEGETABLES

Cel

The project aims to demonstrate that a cold storage of fruits and vegetables can be kept at low temperature (4 deg C) by a solar installation, composed of evacuated tubular collectors and an absorption cooling machine. This solution is especially attractive for regions where the electricity grid is not well developed.

The solar system provides cold to a storage chamber of 20 m3 for fruits and vegetables. This buffer storage is kept at 4 deg.C and the foods are kept for an average of 4 days (which is the period between harvesting and loading of the goods).
The solar system consists of :
- 16 m2 of evacuated tubular collectors THERMOMAX
- a hot storage
- an absorption cooling machine (with LiBr, alcohol, ZnBr)
- a cold storage with phase change materials (to provide cold at night)
- a large surface heat exchanger in the storage chamber
The system operates as follows :
The solar collectors heat water up to 85-90 deg C. This heat drives the absorption cooling machine to produce cold at - 4 deg.C which is led through the heat exchanger in the storage chamber and through the cold store.
The absorption cooling machine works 5 hours per day at full charge (high irradiance) and 5 hours at reduced charge. At night, the cold store is sufficient to cover the thermal cold needs.
The fans, pumps and the regulation are powered by photovoltaic panels and batteries (10 m2 for a consumption of 320 W electrical).
The storage chamber itself has 8 cm insulation in the walls and the cold energy needs are about 28600 frig/day, 25 % reloading of fruits and vegetables per day.
