FEASIBILITY STUDY OF UTILISATION OF GAS MADE FROM COAL TO SUBSTITUTE FUEL OIL IN A CERAMIC KILN AND TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY

Cel

To undertake a feasibility study relating to the production of a medium calorific value fuel gas from a fluidised bed gasifier together with the subsequent use of this gas on brick/tile kilns and in the direct production of electricity.
The study will aim to identify suitable equipment suppliers and based on the overall capital cost for the system, the operating savings and payback period will be calculated.L%
This design study was jointly undertaken by Otto-Simon Carves Ltd, England and Lusoceram, Portugal for the installation of a fluidised bed coal gasification system. The project was based on converting the existing ceramic production equipment owned and operated by Lusoceram from fuel oil to a coal derived gas. In addition, the viability of generating the majority of the works electrical requirement from a dual fuel engine and alternator utilising the gasifier fuel gas was investigated.
The nominated scheme comprised of two oxygen enriched fluidised bed gasifiers, an on-site oxygen production system based on vacuum swing adsorption technology, a fuel gas cooling/cleaning system, gas distribution system and a reciprocating dual fuel engine.
The capital and operating costs for the final scheme were assessed and the economic viability of the project calculated. Unfortunately, the economic viability for the scheme was not sufficiently attractive to move to the demonstration phase because of the low world prices for fuel oil. In addition, the study identified several technical uncertainties about operating a dual fuel engine with a gasifier fuel gas.
The long term economic viability of this type of scheme is directly dependant on the comparative world prices for fuel oil and coal and the present rate of increase in fuel oil prices would have to change dramatically to make this project viable.
Two gasifiers will be supplied with coal from a stockpile by a mechanical handling system. Fluidisation will be achieved by air located with the gasifiers. An oxygen plant will be installed in order to oxygen enrich the air supplied to the gasifiers.
Partially cleaned gas from the two gasification plant will be boosted to a higher pressure and then cooled by quenching, cleaned by scrubbing with water and distributed to new burners on the existing kilns and to the reciprocating gas engine.
The gas engine will drive an alternator for the generation of electricity.
Steam will be raised in the waste heat boilers associated with the gasifiers and gas engine. A small quantity of additional steam will be provided by a coal fired boiler.
The steam will be fed to new air heaters installed at the brick and tile driers. The new steam distribution system will also interface with the existing steam circuit in order to supply existing users.
A cooling tower and water circuit be provided with the installation.
