Aerogel for particle identification in high-energy physics

Cel

This project has the goal to produce silica aerogel with high optical quality to be used as a radiator of Cherenkov light for particle identification detectors in high energy physics within a high multiplicity particle environment, as will be the case at the LHC.
The project covers two complementary aspects:
1) development of techniques of production and quality control of aerogel (e.g. to achieve excellent transparency, large block size and thickness, homogeneity of index of refraction over large dimensions. Tasks of NIS teams) and;
2) measurement of optical characteristics and tests of the aerogel in a particle beam (e.g. actual performance in producing Cherenkov light in a charged particle beam from CERN accelerators, ability to reconstruct the Cherenkov rings with accuracy high enough to assign masses with high statistical significance in the energy range of 1GeV - several GeV. Tasks of INTAS teams).
The work will consist of iterations of tasks 1) and 2), to provide, in the first stage of the project, the feed-back from the tests to improve the production in order to converge to the expected goal.
The final results will be published in relevant physics journals and communicated to conferences on particle detectors.
In the case of successful outcome of the project, a wide range of applications for aerogel is open, in all particle detectors in which particle identification is a crucial aspect. This can be the case at the LHC, HERA, Tevatron machines and future Linear Colliders.
