Deformation and fracture instabilities in novel materials and processes

The proposed RTN on Deformation and Fracture Instabilities in Novel Materials and Processes, is an outgrowth of a previous interdisciplinary TMR network on spatio-temporal instabilities occurring in a variety of materials ranging from soils and rocks to metals and polymers. The goal of the present RTN is to focus only on novel materials and processes with immediate applications to automotive and aerospace industries, manufacturing, microelectronics and surface modification technologies, as well as potential impact to nanotechnology and biotechnology. To this end, the previous TMR partnership is modified to include expertise on interdisciplinary novel materials research and engineering. The research objectives of the proposed RTN are as follows:
(i) Develop continuum, stochastic and discrete theoretical and numerical models for describing deformation and fracture instabilities occurring at nano, micro, meso, and macro scales. Fractal and wavelet analyses will be employed for bridging length scales and relating micro to macro response. Novel experiments pertaining to new predictions on pattern formation and size effects in a broad scale spectrum will be conducted. This way a true multiscale modeling approach will be available with all necessary ingredients from theoretical and applied mechanics, materials science and engineering, as well as solid state and nonlinear/statistical physics.
(ii) Revisit the PLC and PSB case-studies of deformation instabilities examined in the previous TMR and consider, in addition, multiple shear banding and crack fingering in nanomaterials for settling unresolved issues and calibrating the models developed in (i).
(iii) Apply these models to metallic foams, GLARE composites, and nanophase materials. Their implications to forming limit diagrams, chip formation, and surface processing will also be explored in relation to optimization of cost and product quality through the prevention of material failures and environ
