Experimental and theoretical studies on nitrous oxide catalytic decomposition for use in small thrusters

Cel

This project concern the area of small propulsion system for spacecraft, especially micro or mini satellite product line. The research of appropriate catalysts for small (Newton class) monopropellant thrusters is considered as one of the major research axis of this field. Nitrous oxide is one interesting so-called "green propellant" candidate as it is non-toxic. In addition, this is a self-pressurized propellant which makes him attractive for system reason. There is however still to be done (see in particular, SSTL publications) to have an appropriate catalyst, giving acceptable performances for the thrusters. It is thought that the present work with the collaboration of our NIS partners, and in particular RSC-AC, which has an extensive theoretical and practical experience on catalytic decomposition of a large range of thrusters and propellants, will contribute to progress on the topic. The goal is to have an appropriate catalyst pack for nitrous catalytic decomposition in a 1N class thrusters
