Statistical physics of complex networks

An EU-funded initiative has introduced the next generation of researchers to a rich and rapidly evolving field that interfaces with statistical physics, computer science and information theory.

The European statistical physics community has established a long tradition of cross-border research collaborations. Before the Initial Training Network (ITN) NETADIS(opens in new window) (Statistical physics approaches to networks across disciplines), however, they had not made coordinated efforts for young scientists to join research teams and enhance their career prospects. With the financial support of the EU, nine leading research institutes and four associated partners from six European countries provided young scientists the opportunity to study the latest applications of statistical physics in network science. A total of 12 fellows who had registered for PhD degrees were recruited. NETADIS partners organised regular workshops for these early-stage researchers (ESRs) to exchange research experiences, insights and new ideas. The largest training events held during the ITN lifetime were three summer schools, which were attended by all ESRs. These events were also open to experienced researchers outside the ITN. Through a multidisciplinary approach, NETADIS promoted significant advancements in the analysis of complex networks and their dynamics. The distinguishing feature of research carried out was the identification of common traits in different types of networks. Its aim is to maximise the adoption of statistical physics approaches for modelling socio-economy as well as neurobiological and social networks. The many exciting NETADIS results have been described in a series of scientific papers published in international peer-reviewed journals. In addition, research findings that were discussed during the first summer school have been made available on VideoLectures.NET(opens in new window), an open access repository of video lectures. Statistical physics offers a wealth of methods as well as concepts to address challenges in network science. Innovative concepts for big data research across different fields, from management and marketing to scientific research, which were developed within NETADIS, have been included in a White Paper.
