Rescuing world monuments and heritage
Many beautiful cultural monuments around the world are in danger. The EU-funded project Trainmonher worked on supporting developing countries to preserve their historical monuments. Specifically, it helped academic institutions in Argentina, Croatia, Mexico and Morocco to develop programmes for reinforcing and preserving cultural heritage. Trainmonher enabled these institutions to disseminate knowledge on construction materials, architecture, civil engineering and building techniques. It taught them to assess environmental impacts on structures and materials, as well as to identify and date key materials. The project added value to the degrees offered at these institutions, enabling students to eventually become qualified professionals in the field not only through high-level education but also through professional training. Moreover, some of these institutions are now able to provide further education to professionals who are already working in related fields, including architects, craftsmen, educators, and curators. Through these initiatives the project upgraded conservation and rehabilitation efforts for cultural monuments in the four target countries, strengthening related academic disciplines and supporting the tourism sector. The EU's expertise in this field will be very helpful in promoting cultural tourism and sustainability, helping local economies and preserving these countries' greatest historical treasures.
