Developing the Moroccan economy through plant research Morocco has set itself the research goal of solving challenges in key areas like agriculture and health. The EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) is helping to realise these goals through partnerships with European research institutes. Climate Change and Environment © Thinkstock Agricultural research is a top priority in Morocco, one of Europe's most stable and dynamic Mediterranean neighbours. In particular, research into aromatic and medicinal plants (MAPs) is a key focus for economic development in the region. The Map2era project was set up by the EU to foster cooperation between the Moroccan National Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (NIMAP) and the European Research Area (ERA). The NIMAP is Africa's biggest and best institute in this field of research. Integration with EU research activities was promoted through networking events, joint research projects and training, as well as by focusing research on meeting national socioeconomic challenges. It is expected that these initiatives will create better financial and career opportunities for the research staff at NIMAP. In addition, one of the project's top priorities was to expose young Moroccan scientists to international and socioeconomically relevant research activities. As with other international research exchanges, Map2era will motivate young researchers to work and live in their own country in order to drive its development.
