Prevention and mitigation of hydro-meteorological risks

As part of the series of Blue Seminars organized by the Environment Institute of the Joint Research Centre, a seminar entitled "Research aspects in the prevention and mitigation of hydro-meteorological risks" will be held in Ispra, Italy, on 30 October 1996.

The seminar will be conducted by Charles Obled, of the "Institut National Polytechnique", Grenoble, France, and will be based on examples taken from investigations in the Rhône-Alpes region of France.

Topics to be covered will include:

- Meteorological forecasts, particularly quantitative precipitations forecasts;
- Transformation of rainfall to run-off;
- Flood generation mechanisms;
- Effects of sewer systems and flood retarding structures in urban catchments;
- Floodplain hydraulics.

The Blue Seminar series serves as an open forum for discussion on the management of water resources in Europe. The seminars will also contribute to the work of the task force on water technologies, established by the Commission.
