GoGreen’s core objective is to initiate the green revolution by reinventing conservation practices towards environmentally friendly and healthy solutions. GoGreen will spearhead this revolution by accomplishing the following objectives:
1. Define parameters for what constitutes green conservation to influence the creation of sector-wide standards.
Extensive meetings in Reporting Period 2 helped define environmental impact parameters for green conservation in the cultural sector. These parameters guided the creation of a draft green definition, the DSA tool workflow, and a decision-making 'green thinking' model, and are published on the project website.
2. Develop preventive conservation practices and a decision-making model that utilises ‘green thinking’ in Conservation.
A prototype decision-making model promoting green conservation practices was developed, alongside models to assess damage to heritage materials in indoor environments. Workshops with practitioners refined the model, focusing on real-world applications.
3. Develop and introduce green innovative materials and methods inspired by historical recipes and methods, biological processes and green chemistry practices.
Benchmark methods were tested in WP3 and WP4, leading to the exploration of historical recipes and green technologies for silver cleaning and eco-friendly painting restoration methods. Sustainable alternatives for metal and glass stabilisation, making use of bio-based materials and green chemistry, were also identified and tested.
4. Create a digital web-app that helps conservators evaluate the environmental impact of their actions and supports their search for greener alternatives. Collection of data and definition of end user requirements.
Research compiled a list of tools and resources, both within and outside the sector, to support the development of a web app that helps conservators evaluate the environmental impact of their actions and find greener alternatives.
5. Empower practitioners by creating a sector-wide paradigm shift, making green thinking the daily standard in conservation
WP8's strategy, through the GoGreen website, social media, newsletters, webinars, and workshops, along with guidance from an Advisory Board, is driving a sector-wide shift toward green thinking in conservation.
