Advanced Safe Separation Technologies and Algorithms

Obiettivo

Air transport throughout the world and particularly in Europe is characterised by major capacity, efficiency and environmental challenges to improve performance. It is time for the 'paradigm change' called for in the GOPVision 2020 report on Air transport. ASSTAR addresses this critical issue by researching and validating two specific areas of ASAS. Package II that have strong potential for near term operational and environmental improvements.

ASSTAR brings together a powerful team of European ATM researchers, industry and, in particular, airlines and ATS providers, to evaluate the following subset of the ASAS Package II airborne separation applications:
-The delegation of conflict resolution manoeuvres to the air, in radar controlled airspace (ASAS crossing and passing) in order to reduce controller workload and improve flight efficiency.
-The use of ADS-B to support new operations in non-radar airspace. This will enable more optimal routing including enhanced use of wind corridors and passing and level changing that are currently severely restricted due to the procedural separation standards.

Combining these two areas in the ASSTAR project will harness the considerable expertise and skills of the consortium and ensure that the solutions will be operationally viable and functionally applicable. This significant objective will be confirmed by the series of project workshops and user forums.

The work will build on the identification of scenarios with potential benefit in order to direct the two distinct activities of definition and validation of the non-radar and radar algorithms and operations. These two themes will be brought together in a comprehensive procedure associated with air and ground implementation requirements. In addition, key safety assessment tasks will deliver a coherent set of operational procedures and implementation algorithms, which, due to airline and ANSP involvement, will be practical, certifiable and cost effective.
