Report on measured radiation tolerance of optimised test structures and sensors. (Task 6.3)

Initial pixel characterisation

Very high Voltage

Characterisation of phenomena related to high field in noble gases and liquids; study of construction techniques for cathodes, drift field cages and feedthroughs; VHV generation and transport techniques. (Task 8.5)

Advanced Mechanical facility

Definition of facility requirements: Identification of parameters characterizing the performance of support structures and identification of experimental techniques which make these parameters accessible, prioritization of the need by the international community for these measurements at a central facility. (Task 9.3)

Data acquisition software

A software, including EUDAQ interfaces, run control, data monitoring and slow control will be available for common detector test-beams. (Tasks 5.3, 5.4)

Performance of test infrastructure for highly granular optical readout

Documentation of the commissioning, performance and utilisation of the test systems for highly granular calorimeters with optical readout. (Task 14.2)

TCAD model radiation damage

New TCAD model to reproduce the macroscopic effects of radiation damage in the bulk and at the silicon-oxide interface. Comparison with experimental results on irradiated pixel sensors, comprehensive of those produced within Task 7.3. (Task 7.2)

Magnetisation of large-scale cryogenic liquid detectors

Evaluation of magnetisation based on Superconducting Transmission Lines and High Temperature Superconducting lines. First tests of the novel magnetization schemes on iron using the MIND50 hardware available from the previous AIDA. (Task 8.6)

Development of double-phase techniques for ionisation charges amplification and assessment of charge readout front-end cryogenic electronics. (Task 8.3)

LGAD characterisation

Characterisation for the LGAD detectors in terms of charge collection and time resolution with different methods. Technological recommendation for the future productions. (Task 7.5)

Simulation of 3D pixel sensor cells

Simulation of new sensor cells for thin 3D sensors with fine pitch, reduced column diameter and inter-column distance. Simulation of charge collection properties of 3D sensors with thinner substrates and determination of optimal thickness for pixel detectors working at HL-LHC. (Task 7.2)

Online event data model

Definition of the online event data model, i.e. the concept of an event for detector systems having very different integration times, compatible with the offline software and in coordination with WP3. (Task 5.5)

Common DAQ system used in combined beam tests

The DAQ system will be in use in common test-beam campaigns and the final description of the implementation and performance results will be presented in a report. (Tasks 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5)

Evaluation of large area photo-detectors, assessment of wavelength-shifting techniques and digitisation techniques for the scintillation signals in noble liquids. (Task 8.4)

Technology recommendations for µ-channel cooling

Report detailing the state-of-the-art technologies selected for the production process of µ-channel cooling devices to be installed in future HEP experiments. (Task 9.2)

Interface definition

Definition of interface standards for the common DAQ system which will describe how the detector DAQ system connects to the common DAQ. (Task 5.2)

Sensor-design guidelines

Recommendations for sensor layouts optimised for radiation hardness, based on simulation results. (Task 6.2)

Optimised interconnection process

Basic R&D with different adhesives, dispensing and curing methods on electrical test structures to achieve precise alignment, high and uniform capacitance and sufficient yield and reproducibility. Mechanical and electrical characterisation of the glued assemblies. (Task 6.4)

Use of AIDA-2020 results

This deliverable describes the results generated by the project and how the project intends for these results to be used and communicated beyond the lifetime of the project. (Task 2.2)

MPGD gain map hole-by-hole

Large-size prototype of the system for hole-by-hole gain measurement with UV light, in correlation with defects identified through optical inspection, for THGEMs and GEMs. (Task 13.4)

Cold irradiations at Birmingham

A cold box for irradiations between room temperature and -40 degrees C up to high proton fluences of the order of 10^17 p/cm^2 is installed in the Birmingham facility. The corresponding DAQ and temperature control systems are manageable via a user friendly GUI. (Task 15.5)

Frascati photon tagging system

Re-design and refurbishing of Frascati photon tagging system is completed, the source is commissioned and the performance of the system is evaluated. (Task 15.4)

Miniaturised HV power supply

Prototype of a MPGD-dedicated, remotely controlled, compact HV power supply; the control system includes the feed-back from environmental parameter sensors in order to implement on-line voltage compensation to obtain a stable gain. (Task 13.3)

Assemblies delivered

Use the sensors produced in Task 6.3 (Sensor development) to produce assemblies of sensors and readout ASICs for all participating projects. Mount assemblies on test boards provided by the participating projects. Make wire-bond connections between chips and PCBs. (Task 6.4)

Large-size prototype of R-WGEM

A large-size fully engineered and validated prototype of the Resistive-Well GEM, namely R-WGEM, a single multiplication stage MPGD produced by photolithographic technologies for large size and mass production able to stand high event rates. (Task 13.2)

JSI TRIGA Reactor Transport system

The transport system for large objects of a diameter of up to 12cm into the reactor irradiation position including the possibility for electrical and cooling connections to the samples has been installed and commissioned. (Task 15.5)

µ-channel prototypes

µ-channel cooling devices in Si-Si and Si-Glass available to the partners for execution of the agreed test programme, including final model validation. Specifications, geometries and features previously agreed by the partners. (Task 9.2)

CMOS 65 nm engineering run

Availability of the run with the “ATLAS/CMS” and CLICPIX pixel chips. (Task 4.2)

Updated readout system

Adaptation of readout system for operation in compact LC detectors implying optimisation of space and power consumption. Demonstration of concept with existing calorimeter prototypes and proposal of extrapolation to full size detector. (Task 14.5)

Data acquisition hardware

As well as the TLU and software, the computing infrastructure, principally PCs, disks and networking, will be ready. (Tasks 5.2, 5.3)

Very compact calorimeters

Development of a flexible mechanical frame to be completed with thin precise absorber plates with a total depth of 30 radiation lengths, validation in beam tests. (Task 14.3)

GIF++ Facility upgrade

Cosmic ray trackers are installed on the side walls to enlarge the coverage, the instantaneous dose rate monitor and the augmented reality system for GIF++ are installed and commissioned. (Task 15.5)

Trigger Logic Unit ready

The TLU hardware, including interface to CCC, will be ready, along with first versions of firmware and software for testing and integration with detector systems. (Task 5.2)

GIF++ gas system

The gas system has been equipped with additional distribution panels and mixers to allow for more parallel users. An IR analysis system has been installed. (Task 15.5)

Radiation-hard facility instrumentation for the CERN proton facility

beam profile monitor operational, box allowing to irradiate samples at -40 degrees C installed in the beam line and sample holders on radiation hard material produced and tested up to 10^17 p/cm^2. (Task 15.5)

Common running of calorimeter prototypes

Data acquisition system to allow for a common data taking of different highly granular calorimeter prototypes in beam tests at CERN and DESY. These tests should provide data files containing events synchronised between the subsystems. (Task 14.4)

CERN pixel beam telescope for the PS

Construction, installation, commissioning. (Task 15.2)

Silicon strip reference tracker at DESY

Construction, installation, commissioning and performance evaluation. (Task 15.3)

Electron beam welding demonstrator

Prototype of a large-size high-gain MPGD

Environmental control system at DESY

Central environmental control and monitoring system at the DESY-II Test Beam Facility, which can be used by all user groups (hardware, software, user interfaces). (Task 15.3)

Advanced Assembly chain for Si calorimeters

Tools to assure a reproducible, well documented construction of a small series of calorimeter layers including technical documentation of process for fast transfer to mass production. Test benches for validation of individual components as e.g. Si Wafers. (Task 14.3)

BICMOS SiGe engineering run
