Plug-and-Play product and process innovation for Energy-efficient building deep renovation

Periodic Reporting for period 3 - P2Endure (Plug-and-Play product and process innovation for Energy-efficient building deep renovation)

Okres sprawozdawczy: 2019-03-01 do 2021-02-28

•What is the problem/issue being addressed?
A large number of innovative solutions for deep renovation have become available from recent EU-funded research projects. What is urgently needed is to increase the scale and level of adoption through innovative combinations, processes and supporting ICT tools. P2Endure will resolve the main barrier for wide-scale implementation of innovative solutions: the absence of solid empirical evidence that such innovative solutions deliver the expected performance, both energetically and financially. P2Endure will also create the supply-chain infrastructure for large-scale commercial implementation and upscaling of prefab deep renovation solutions.

•Why is it important for society?
The ultimate success of deep renovation can only be proven in the building’s long-term sustainability; and therefore, the energy performance goals of deep renovation are achieved when the building optimally fulfils its functional and user requirements throughout its lifecycle. P2Endure ensures that public and residential buildings are functionally, technically and socio-economically viable at all times –including through transformation of the building’s typology and function at deep renovation.

•What are the overall objectives?
P2Endure mainly aims to provide scalable, adaptable and ready-to-implement innovative PnP prefab solutions for deep renovation of building envelopes and technical systems. The innovative solutions will be complemented with a proof-of-performance, which is based on pilot implementation and monitoring in 11 live demonstration projects representing deep renovation characteristics in all main EU geo-clusters.
P2Endure provides evidence-based innovative solutions for deep renovation that are applicable and replicable for the widest range of building typologies: public buildings, residential buildings, and transformation projects of public and historic buildings into dwellings. P2Endure takes on a progressive principle:
• Build further on credible state-of-the-art solutions of 3D scanning and printing technologies in combination with prefab renovation systems, which are derived from tested results of recent EU and national R&D projects.
• Develop modular processes for deep renovation through BIM-based design, engineering, production and installation for speeding up the implementation of the state-of-the-art solutions.
• Optimise and integrate the state-of-the-art solutions grounded in practical evidence of their performance through real deep renovation cases of public and residential buildings.
• Perform real deep renovation projects at a higher complexity level and with a larger performance impact than typical residential buildings through transformation of obsolete public and historic buildings.
Product optimization
• Elaborating PnP solutions directly addressing live demonstration cases (D1.1) and sets of renovation solutions of buildings HVAC systems (D1.3);
• Development and optimisation of the Plug-and-Play solutions in progress;
• A start was made for 3D, 4D and 5D BIM in combination with demonstration projects in D4.5.

Process innovation
• Presenting conceptual BIM configurator at the M12 GA in Genoa: for one Polish demonstration case (Warsaw) the windows and façade elements are already available in the parametric modeller developed by TUB.
• Performing 3D laser scanning, thermal scanning and creating BIM models based on the achieved point clouds of several cases: 3D laser scanning is used for the Warsaw, Gdynia and Lekkerkerk demonstrations.
• Presenting conceptual e-Marketplace (D2.5)
• LCC and asset management is applied for the Genoa demonstration case (D2.4)

Validation and evaluation
• On-going discussions and experiments with BIM-to-BEM-to-Energy Simulation. Collecting data on energy consumptions of the demo cases. First energy calculations, incl. simulations on potential energy savings of the Genoa demo case.
• Detailing monitoring aspects and procedures for IEQ (D7.2). Installation of IEQ monitoring and first results in the Genoa and Warsaw demo case
• Methods and tools to for energy calculations have been finalised. The tools are also based on BIM-to-BEM approach for enabling simplified investigation on potential PnP packages application to achieve the 60% of energy reduction. Procedure applied to 9 demo cases and handbook for achieving the 60% of energy reduction provided with deliverable D3.1.
• Protocol for the IEQ monitoring and assessment completely developed and deployed in 4 demonstration cases. In Warsaw and Gdynia demonstration cases the innovative Comfort Eye technology has been applied. Initial results are derived to provide feedback to the renovation design (D4.7).

Demonstration projects
• The original list of demonstration projects has been changed: new situation 11 active demonstration projects and 2 virtual projects.
• Continuation of performing laser / thermal scanning and creating BIM models of the demo cases;

Market upscaling
• Creating an activity plan for establishment of TCP (Technology Commercialisation Platform) with a preliminary list of stakeholders (D5.1). Involving several stakeholders in the Technical Workshop in Warsaw (PL) on 31.01-02.02.2017
• Organising the first TCP event (more than 100 attendants) and Joint workshop on Deep Renovation with synergy projects on 5th of October 2018 (D5.2);

Dissemination and synergy
• Maintaining the project website (regular updates). Releasing the first 3 Newsletters in M6, M17, M28; being active on social media, participating in events (D6.1 D6.2)
• Planning and actuating the communication and dissemination strategy (D6.3 D6.4).
• Identifying S-O-T-A renovation technologies, their replicability potential and further development in different EU-funded projects (D6.5).
• Creating and maintaining the project website. Releasing the 2nd (winter 2017/2018) and 3rd Newsletter (Spring 2019) , being active on social media, participating in events (D6.1 D6.2)
• Publication of 4 scientific papers (3 of them also presented during the conference). Presentation of the project in several international events. See also D5.2.
• Synergy with the RenoZEB project (joint technical activities) See also D7.3 for other synergies with H2020 projects during Sustainable Places 2018 and SBE 2018 Retrofit Europe Conference.
Flexibility of solution choice in holistic building renewal
• The holistic approach of P2Endure leaves a freedom of product choice and allows for staged renovations through novel combinations of SME-driven innovative Plug-and-Play (PnP) prefab components depending on the conditions and needs of the real deep renovation projects. In the reporting period, this flexibility has been included in the design and engineering of PnP solutions for 5 real demo cases.

On-site 3D printing and measurement
• P2Endure advances with on-site 3D-printing with collaborative robotic technologies. In the reporting period, the combined solutions 3D BIM, control software, printing (spraying façade materials), and finishing (moulding) have been applied in Denmark.

Building information model (BIM)
• In P2Endure, BIM is used throughout the whole deep renovation process. In the reporting period, most real demo cases have been modelled in BIM, some based on 3D data acquisition (3D point cloud). The BIM models are used for the Parametric Configurator to allow quick selection of PnP solutions against the targeted EeB performance.
