Network for European Research and Innovation acceleration in the US

Periodic Reporting for period 3 - NearUS (Network for European Research and Innovation acceleration in the US)

Okres sprawozdawczy: 2019-10-01 do 2020-09-30

ENRICH in the USA established itself as a central contact point for European R&I actors seeking to grow and reinforce collaboration across the Atlantic.
The mission of ENRICH in the USA (NearUS) has been to provide standardised as well as various tailor-made (i.e. smart/industry specialization) internationalisation support and education services to European researchers and innovators, to help them accelerate their access to the US market, and maximise their chances of success; offering programs, curriculums, and events, as well as a unique access to incredibly performing tech ecosystems.
Services target various, commercially viable technology maturity levels, both research-oriented and market-oriented and have included: research connection symposia, business matchmaking opportunities, working visits, immersion weeks, innovation tours to US organisations to explore technology/product partnerships and/or business development middle/long term opportunities, pitching to potential investors, entrepreneurial bootcamps, workspace access, mentorship/advisory, hands-on (pre-acceleration) enrichment programmes, and more. As the ENRICH in the USA initiative is highly competitive to best serve the strongest researchers and entrepreneurs, all services (free or not) have been offered through an open and transparent selective mechanism. The ENRICH in the USA Network is built on local US experience and strong existing ties between the EU and US, while providing new researcher‐ and entrepreneur- serving capabilities which address the resource gaps necessary to enable access for all EU Member States and Associated Countries, as well as every state in the US.
The project was implemented in two phases: first the “planning phase” (M1-M18) and then the “implementation phase” (M19-M42). It started with preparatory work that included an analysis of the existing offer and demand, which was the basis for the development of a Network concept and a services action plan. In the following, both were put into practice: the network was set up with physical locations – centres in San Francisco, Boston and later Washington, DC, and landing hubs across the US – and a variety of services was developed. These implementation activities were strongly supported by transversal actions such as European-wide outreach to gather customers among R&I stakeholders, including intermediaries. They involved valuable expert partners that supported the local immersion in the US and the spreading of awareness within Europe.
From the beginning, the sustainability of the Network and its activities was at the heart of the project teams’ efforts: indeed, a “Blueprint for long-term sustainability” was prepared and then put into action, including the development of Centre-specific business plans. The activity of ENRICH in the USA will continue: a follow-up project will bring the services activity to an even higher level and a recently created association, called ENRICH Global, will ensure that the network has a representation at a longer stage. The objective of ENRICH GLOBAL is to contribute to the development of European scientific, technological and innovation excellence, reinforce innovation competitiveness and internationalisation and take European innovation global and as such it is an excellent mechanism to ensure sustainability. It can be expected that the Network and its activities will gain in visibility and impact.

The ENRICH in the USA Network was able to establish itself as central contact point for European actors, deploying important efforts on the recognition of the branding in the community. It was setup in a collaborative approach based on already established and sustainable networks from Europe and the USA and is planning to become a self-sustainable initiative in the upcoming years. It is a unique combination of competences in innovation support services, business development, networking and support to policy makers.

The ENRICH initiative is highly innovative, and significantly differs from “classical” Horizon 2020 projects. It has developed both organisational innovation, i.e. a new organisational method in order to improve the use of knowledge, workflows efficiency and quality of its services, and also englobes processes leading to the establishment of new management methods, as well as service innovation, benefitting both European research and innovation organisations and the project partners’ competitive edge.

ENRICH in the USA has served over 730 individual European researchers and entrepreneurs (EU MS/AC) through some 35 services and reached many more through its online tools, studies and guidance. The customers are offered a unique journey based on demand-driven services to support them at each step in their development phase. The overall aim was to add value to the existing initiatives on the market and numerous services have been implemented in co-organisation with renown partners.

ENRICH in the USA (powered by NearUS) is now established and continues its efforts to be recognized as the entry point for European Research & Innovation actors internationalising to the US, providing valuable services both in the EU and in the USA. The follow-up project is expected to achieve the extra mile towards sustainability, both for the overall network and the centres involved.
