The AMIDE (advanced multimedia information dissemination) system enables electronic shopping centres to be set up either on the Internet or on compact disc read only memory (CD-ROM). Customers can use the system to make purchases or to order services from suppliers represented in the 'shopping centre'. Service providers advertise their services in the global directory which customers can browse. Customers then pay the suppliers for any items or services they require.
The AMIDE software supports all the key functions for the successful marketing of information and services, including financial management, service presentation and selection, access to information, pay on use, royalty payment, electronic payment and copyright protection. Intelligent help desk facilities enable system errors and faults to be detected.
Different versions of the software are available for network operators, information distributors and users, and CD-ROM producers. The complete environment, AMIDE Telecom, is available for network operators wanting to develop multimedia information services. A subset of the software, Amide Internet provides copyright protection and a secure electronics payments system for providers of commercial services on the Internet. Amide Off-Line is a tool for CD-ROM producers, enabling them to distribute CD-ROMs for little or no cost and receive payments according to the information that customers actually access.
