The Nudge project made several key advancements. It developed personalized nudges tailored to individual consumers, implemented pilot interventions in real-world settings across Europe, actively engaged stakeholders throughout the project, and created a guide for designing effective nudges based on insights from various research fields. The project created a valuable resource (Deliverable D2.1) to guide the development of impactful nudges, drawing on insights from various relevant research fields. Field experiments across five countries tested nudge interventions in diverse contexts, providing valuable data for future applications.
The project's personalized nudge interventions hold promise for leading to long-term changes in consumer behavior, although the exact scale of such changes requires further long-term monitoring. Interactive nudges and automated features, like optimized electric vehicle charging, resulted in energy savings of up to 16% for participating households. The findings highlight the importance of context-specific design for nudge interventions. Effectiveness can vary depending on factors like user engagement with digital tools, seasonal energy demands, and baseline consumption patterns influenced by weather conditions.
The development of evidence-based policy recommendations (Deliverable D5.3) has the potential to significantly influence energy policy at national and EU levels. This could lead to the implementation of more effective policies promoting energy-efficient behaviors across society. The project's findings can be applied to behavior change efforts beyond energy use. By demonstrating the effectiveness of personalized nudges, the project can inform interventions in various domains, such as promoting healthy habits or encouraging environmentally friendly practices. Widespread adoption of energy-efficient behaviors can lead to economic benefits for consumers through reduced energy bills. Additionally, it can contribute to environmental benefits by lowering greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change.
The project demonstrably achieved significant success in raising public awareness, exceeding its target of reaching businesses, households, and financing institutions. A targeted multi-channel outreach strategy reached over 314,000 individuals. Nudge actively fostered knowledge exchange with policymakers and stakeholders through workshops, events, and project presentations, reaching an estimated audience of over 7,000. Stakeholder engagement in Croatia directly influenced legislative amendments promoting best practices in energy use monitoring.
