MANAGING DIGITAL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY IN MANUFACTURING SMES DIGITALIZATION PROCESSES

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - Go-DIP (MANAGING DIGITAL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY IN MANUFACTURING SMES DIGITALIZATION PROCESSES)

Okres sprawozdawczy: 2021-04-01 do 2022-04-30

The responsibilities regarding data security and privacy are not defined. Data intellectual property (IP) situation is more complex in connection with AI. Legal practices are scarce. There are exemptions such as IP protection capability of database structures and long-term data connected with product use, which are not widely known and used. SMEs often do not know how to protect and exploit software and other intangible matters. Involved innovation agencies will acquire the capacity to consult and guide manufacturing SMEs and researchers in managing and protecting Digital IP while innovating their products and services. A range of new topics in innovation support to SMEs is developed. The use of the designed methodology will enable innovation agencies to manage innovation and technology transfer processes, including knowledge sharing, joint collaboration, and open innovation. The objective of the project Go-DIP is to build a new “demand-driven” innovation support service for the SMEs.
Task 1 was dedicated to the collecting of challenges, experiences and good practices through questionnaire results and identifying SMEs in the partner regions that are using digital data and manage data IP in their daily practices,
At the core of the Go-DIP project, interaction with SMEs was aspired to dive into the reality of digital transformation and engage with the real-world experience of businesses with Industry 4.0 implementation and related IP management. The involvement
of SMEs was achieved through a preparatory survey and a series of three workshops focusing on digital IP and data agreements, legal aspects of digital IP and data management, and data-driven innovation and exploitation.
Partners also identified and engaged key experts practitioners to provide needed inputs on the three relevant topics of the Go Dip project and participate in the workshops and preparation of the Design Option Paper.
Survey was filled up by 26 companies, 15 of which from Switzerland, 6 from Slovenia and 5 from Italy. The survey results helped to shape the agendas for the three Go-DIP workshops by shedding light on common issues discussed with experts and SMEs during the workshops implementation.

Task 2 was focused on implementing the three peer learning workshops and providing needed inputs for the Design Option Paper. The workshop on Legal aspects of digital IP data was held on November 19th 2021, followed by the workshops on legal aspects of the IP management on the 26th November 2021, and the Exploitation of digital data on the 7th of December. In total 69 participants from SMEs, 48 from research and technology organizations, 48 from innovation agencies, 6 from public administration, and 2 from associations were attending the workshops along with the partners and experts.
The workshop registrations were published on YouTube platform and will be linked to enable companies and innovation agencies that could benefit of their content to review the contents and the rich information set on the legal and business aspects of Digital IP management.

Task 3 was about the design of new support initiatives in digital IP management i.e. drafting of the Design Option Paper as a guidelines for assisting companies with better management of the digital data IP. With the help of experts and information gathered during the three workshops and cases provided by SME's and other project stakeholders as well as with the reference literature and information available on the European Union legislation and strategic orientations partners drafted a final result of the project i.e. The Go DIP Design Option Paper.
The Design Option Paper was put together as an e-brochure including guidelines/flowcharts for SME's, an appendix on the relevant European Union regulations and an appendix on the cases of the Digital IP valorisation collected as study cases, provided by the SME's, research and innovation organisations and public administration authorities and/or provided by the experts and project partners own practices.

A project web site was created, communication before and after the three workshops was supported by use of partners social media and by project supporting partners channels. Partners organized monthly meetings and used e-platforms to communicate as Covid 19 period prevented partners and other participants from travelling.

The Design Option Paper as the key output of the Go-Dip project is widely disseminated through the project web site (https://go-dip.eu) and Go-DIP project partners web sites (Jožef Stefan Institute, Innosqare and HIT), through the project supporting partners communication channels i.e. web sites, social media and newsletters (Technology parks, National Intellectual Property Offices, Technology Transfer Agencies, Chambers of Economy in Trentino, Italy, Slovenia and Freiburg Switzerland), national Digital Innovation Hubs and partners networks such as European Factories of the Future Research Association (EFFRA), EUSALPS, CTN Fabbrica Intelligente etc.) EISMEA - the European Innovation and SME Executive Agency, WIPO, EPO, EUIPO, IPR HELP DESKS and others. The results of the project were also presented on the 26th of April 2022 during the IP fair World Intellectual Property Day 2022. IP and Youth: Innovating for a Better Future, World Intellectual Property Organization. Companies and all participants of the three events will also receive the DOP and social media of the partners will be used to promote the final result of the Go DIP project.
The key result of the Go DIP project was a Design Option paper (DOP) that is a manual to be used with a new support initiative for the agencies assisting SME's with the digital data management. Upon wider dissemination of the key result of the Go-Dip project, the DOP is expected to support that the agencies and organizations involved with assisting European SME's will be able to provide new quality services, assisting SMEs with handling the digital data IP issues better and to better utilize and monetize data in their business models.
The DOP is also great contribution to the digital agenda of the European Union, national intellectual property offices, EUIPO, and WIPO.
Partners involved were able to gain a new project in the scope of the Horizon Human program that will further explore in more detail some of the aspects of managing digital data and intellectual property rights throughout the European Union area.
European SMEs will become more resilient on the global markets. They will be better equipped to address digital IP challenges with their innovation, and exponential growth of the global digital economy.Go-DIP results are expected also to address European Union (EU) and changing national policy requirements and recommendations prepared in 2020/2021/2022, such as regulations with approaches and principles of access, use, and re-use of data in building data spaces, approaches to ethical and trustworthy use of Artificial Intelligence(AI) as well indirectly also initiatives as the OECD and other global initiatives guiding principles (such as of the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) and others.
