CATALYTIC NITROGEN OXIDES ELIMINATION FROM DIESEL AND LEAN GASOLINE ENGINE EXHAUST GASES

Objective

The main results of this project are:
- a large improvement of the understanding of reaction mechanism and requirements for catalyst formulations
- a good description of the influence of the type of hydrocarbon on NOx reduction
- a large improvement of the performances of Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst
- transition metal catalysts active under simplified test conditions but not under real exhaust
- platinum and platinum-copper formulations particularly adapted for diesel applications
- a process based on the injection of hydrocarbons ahead of the catalyst
- 60% NOx elimination on a lean gasoline engine under stationnary conditions
- 20% NOx elimination on a DI car tested on the European test cycle.
Diesel engines and lean-burn gasoline engines have nitrogen oxides emissions exceeding the level that is foreseen in the future antipollution regulations. Their exhaust gases containing a large excess of oxygen, three-way catalysts cannot be used to clean these engines. Consequently another depollution techniques has rapidly to be found. Otherwise it will be out of question to employ this type of engines in a near future, which would be deplorable due to their high efficiency and for diesel engines their reliability, durability and ability to use a petroleum cut not convenient for spark-ignition engines.

The goal of the programme which is proposed is the research of new catalysts able to remove NO in the presence of oxygen in excess. The two routes which are considered are either NO decomposition into N2+02, or its selective chemical reduction by hydrocarbons present in engine exhaust gases (preexisting or post-injected hudrocarbons).

The case of the main diesel or spark-ignition engine types will be considered: private car or truck engines, two strokes or four strokes engines.

The final target of this work is then to contribute to the design of new fuel-efficient "clena cars".

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
