CIM BUILDING BLOCK FOR THE AUTOMATED PRODUCTION OF PLASTIC PARTS

Cel

The following general results have been reached:
A modular structure for shop floor control in plastic processing companies
A classification of companies according to different needs on shop floor control
A scheme for calculating the material, energy and loan savings that could be reached by introducing shop floor/process control.

The following results have been reached during the project concerning the pilot plant installation:
Based on a detailed user requirements analysis, the Cell controller of the FDA/PDA/DNC system has been reimplemented for the UNIX and MS Windows NT operating system platforms.
The reimplementation of the Remote Controller of the MSS system has been started using a SCADA development tool on MS Windows NT. Two new drivers have been implemented for the Remote Controller.
The Material Database Manager and an application database for the pilot user have been developed for MS Windows.
The Cell Controller, the FDA/PDA/DNC system and the Material Database Manager have been installed at the pilot plant. The installation and integration of the MSS Remote Controller still has to be performed.
The Cell Controller at the pilot plant has been linked to the existing PPC system.

The link of the Cell Controller to the MSS Remote Controller still has to be performed.
The European plastic processing industry is faced with increased market demands:

- Just-In-Time deliveries e.g. automotive industry
- The need for quality authentication
- Increasing cost pressures against a background of continuous price decreasing
- Demand to save raw material and energy

At the same time, the variety of raw materials available has increased enormously, processing machinery and peripheral equipment have become more and more sophisticated. In order to cope with these conflicting market conditions, new information and data processing systems should be developed. They should act as a support for management, effectively coordinating quality, costs and deadlines. Existing information systems can only deal with these different areas separately.

A CIM Building Block should be developed. This Block consists of an interactive Cell Controller working together with enhanced subsystems. These modules have the capacity to meet all requirements of the plastic processing sector simultaneously. They will store information of production planning, operation management, process management and quality control.

Control operators will be able to access specialized data bases such as material data banks, which will store information from the plastic producers and data on plant-specific production experiences to make their decisions. Evaluation software will link up different areas which will offer the operators a range of alternative strategies to help them make the most suitable operating management decisions.
