Use of natural gas in passenger cars - components for bifuel vehicles and concepts to handle varying gas compositions

Use of Natural gas in passenger cars - Components for
bifuel vehicles and concepts to handle varying gas
compositions
Air pollution in congested cities and carbondioxide
emissions can be reduced by use of alternative fuels for
vehicles powered by combustion engines. Natural gas (NG)
is the most suitable alternative fuel because it is
available, cheap and environmentally friendly. This
estimation is backed up by the activities of US and
Japanese car manufacturers too. To have a chance for
selling natural gas vehicles (NGVs) in a big scale
technology has to be adapted to actual situation of NG
refuelling infrastructure. Because there are few
refuelling stations available in most potential markets
today first and probably second generation of NGVs have
to be bifuel vehicles. Those NGVs allow operation on a
very low emission level by using NG in inner cities
without the restrictions of typical city car concepts (
e.g. electric car) for long distance travelling. A second
car is not necessary in most cases.
State of the art NGVs are not able to use completely the
advantages of NG . Available components and the big range
of NG compositions supplied from local networks to
refuelling stations clearly limit emission reduction
potential. So main objectives of this project are:
*Research and prototype development of future components
(mixture preparation, catalyst, NG composition sensor,
exhaust oxygen sensor for bifuel use).
*Development of new engine control strategies to cope
with NG composition ranges as big as possible.
*Analysis of effects of NG composition on engine
operation (database for prenormative discussion and
recommendation on NG composition requirements for NGVs).
*To understand the nature of, and quantify, the
variability in gas composition throughout Europe.
*Analysis of impacts of refuelling technologies on NG
composition seen by the engine.
*Prototype NGVs (using different engine designs) fitted
with prototype components and strategies specified and
developed in this project meeting ULEV standards operated
with changing NG compositions.
The precompetitive cooperation of partners experienced in
NGV technology offers a chance to get lead of technology
worldwide in this area for European industry.
