Environmental carcinogens in Europe: exposure and adduct formation

Cel

The project aims at characterizing the exposures of the Europeans to environmental carcinogens. Three environments and national control environments will be included. In the funded Project 2 European cities, Stockholm and Milan, a Southern vs Northern city were selected for population study. Controls would be taken from the countryside, all subjects being non-smokers. PAHs and alkenes would be measured in air, urine, lymphocyte DNA and hemoglobin.
The Central European funding would involve poland, where sampling would be done in heavily industrialized Silesia. Domestic coal burning is common and the area is probably most polluted in Europe. Summer and Winter sampling will be carried out because the pollution levels are up to 10 times higher in the Winter time. Together with controls from Eastern poland some 300 samples will be collected. Postlabelling is also partially carried out in poland, in addition to air and PAH-exposure measurements. Else the samples are distributed to the different laboratories according to their respective expertize.
The Czech participation is for postlabelling analysis of alkene adducts by a specialist on these types of adducts. The samples collected in Italy and poland will be assayed for alkene adducts in Prague. The Central European participation will complement the study design with a population with heavy industrial and domestic coal combustion exposure. The alkene analysis techniques would be important to assess the effect of small hydrocarbons. If only one project can be funded the polish one is the priority.
