Methods and Problems in Teaching Linguistic, Philological and Literary Latin and Greek in European Universities: Holland and Italy

Obiettivo

Research objectives and content

The general objective is to study and compare, in a practical interactive situation methods and problems of teaching of Classical culture, particularly Latin language and literature, in different European University systems and dealing with students of different mother-tongues. Classical culture in the past has represented one of the most important form of generalised European culture: today it seems important to find ways to make this patrimony accessible to broader groups in a way compatible with greater access to higher education and in adult education. The specific content consists of work and study in the relevant Departments of a Dutch University with an excellent Classics Department and comparison with the methods used in a different context, that of the University of Pisa, also with a renowned Classical Philology Department. This should allow the development of new techniques, applicable in other contexts, of teaching in University "core" courses and advanced courses.

Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)

The personal objective for the proponent is to acquire insight and practical experience in teaching techniques for classical languages in another culture and another modern-day language in order to be le to transfer this knowledge subsequently into teaching activity in the home or other countries. The proponent's knowledge and experience should be of benefit to students and professors in the host institution; final impact should be proposals for bettering techniques for making Classical culture available to vaster strata of European society, hence enhancing the quality of life.

Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)

Very generally, favouring deeper and more homogenous knowledge of European cultural patrimony will be of benefit in managerial and other contacts
