New joining techniques for light magnesium components (MAGJOIN)

Obiettivo

The objective of the Magjoin project is to develop a suitable joining technology for magnesium components and for aluminium-magnesium joints to overcome problems of fragile failure of the joints due to metallurgical and technological aspects. Magnesium is ideally suited for die casting and net shapes are obtainable.

The major obstacle which prevents a further use of magnesium is the difficulty of joining die as parts among them and with components of different materials. This difficulty prevents using magnesium for parts too large to economically cast a single piece. The project aims is to develop a new welding process based on laser melting of special powders as filler material to solve metallurgical problems, extend of special powders as filler material and extend results to arc welding. Friction welding is also promising in joining of different materials and then will be investigated in this project.
A state of the art for processes and metallurgy for mixed joints was established. A suitable configuration of weldable joint by laser and arc processes was described and some specific joints were selected for further experimentation. Study and definition of metallurgical effect on weldability of mixed joints was completed and a list of filler material possible for mixed joints was collected. Filler materials of different chemical composition were produced and transformed in powder useful for laser welding application. Filler materials in powder cored wire shape were also produced for laser and arc welding of mixed joints.

A complete and equipped laser welding tool-head has been designed (on the basis of precise specifications) and built for experimental test. Integration of welding tool-heads in two different places (CRF-Italy and DLR-Germany) made and test validation carried out with positive response.

Weldability test for mixed joints Mg-Mg and Al-Mg carried out by Co2 and Nd: yag laser with positive response. Friction Stir Welding has been also tested for mixed joints and weldability was established.
Metallurgical analysis available for Mg mixed welded joints by laser and appropriate filler materials.
