This project proposed to transfer on to the European market of farm machinery an innovative tool for tractors engine diagnosis called BED (Banc d'Essai Diagnostic) in French or (Diagnose Testing Bench). Users of BED are the European SMEs repairing farm machinery involved at this stage as project partners by the French National small size enterprises federation of farm machinery repairers (FNAR). Recipients of BED will be European farmers who will make substantial fuel savings and are involved at this stage as a project partner by the French national federation of farm machinery users co-operatives (FNCUMA). Farmers will not individually buy BED but will go to the repairer shop and ask for tests.
As there are plans to implement a compulsory control of engines pollution as soon as 1997: BED makes a breakthrough towards the definition of standards for engines operation diagnosis and makes possible an efficient control of engines by better tuning. BED increases the diagnostic capacity of farm machinery repairers thanks to an innovative expert system that analyses the function of the engine, compares it with the standard characteristics of brand new tractors and detects bad tuning and parts to be changed. BED has been developed since 1990 both by Cemagref, the French institute for agricultural and environmental engineering research and Perfagri, a private consultancy company.
Implementation is planned to take place in 4-5 other French regions identified by FNAR, and in 2-3 other EU regions. Thorough testing in real conditions will be performed in region Bretagne. The main participants at this stage will be (1) users such as repairers unions who will implement the demonstration in the field, (2) Perfagri who will provide user training, consultancy service and manage the ultimate adaptation of BED and (3) Maha who will provide the marketing force outside France. User's manual translation and software protection will also be carried out.
