Development of ultra-low-noise superconducting devices for high frequency detection

Cel

The main task of the project is to coordinate efforts of NIS and INTAS members in research and development of novel ultra-low-noise superconducting detectors, spectrometers and high-frequency amplifiers. As results of the project, a novel hot-electron microbolometer, based on Andreev reflections in superconductor/ normal metal boundaries, will be developed conceptually and experimentally. Such a receiver has an extremely high sensitivity and low noise without being high frequency limited by the superconducting energy gap that other superconducting devices are. Direct and heterodyne detectors will be developed in high temperature superconductor technology with the goal of increasing the gap voltage and, thus, the maximum frequency. The noise temperature and conversion of Josephson mixers and detectors in the sub-mm wavelength range will be optimised. A sub-mm wave Hilbert spectrometer will be designed, fabricated, and tested. A prototype of a superconducting spectrometer for radio astronomy and environmental studies will be developed. An intermediate frequency (>1 GHz) SQUID amplifier will be developed.
The fundamental limits in bandwidth and noise of superconducting detectors, spectrometers, bolometers, and amplifiers will be investigated within the project, both theoretically and experimentally. Several of the best-known Russian institutes participate together with European partners that have long and well-documented experience in the field. The partners span over a wide range: physics, materials science, electronics, radio engineering, and users within space astronomy.
