Study of Byurakan star-forming galaxies

Cel

This joint research project on the study of star-forming Byurakan galaxies will be conducted by participants from France, Italy and Armenia. The long-term goal of the project is to provide clues to explain the peculiar properties of the class of ultraviolet-excess dwarf galaxies discovered in numbers at the Byurakan observatory (Armenia) in 1970. These objects are natural laboratories of very active stellar formation, and are thought to represent an active phase of the evolution of all galaxies. Some of them are still in their early formation phase. Their comprehension implies both statistical studies of basic properties and parameters on large samples (100 to 200 objects) and very deep studies with high spatial resolution of a restricted number of carefully selected objects.

This study involves all participants in an important, multispectral observational programme extending over several years and using observatory resources not only in Armenia, France and Italy but also in Germany, USA and India. The observations cover various spectral ranges, from imagery and spectroscopy in the visible and near-infrared to spectroscopy and mapping at radio wavelengths (21 cm line of hydrogen, continuum and molecular lines). Archive space data will also be used. Data reduction is shared between the respective teams of the participants. Theoretical interpretation and modelling will also be made under close co-ordination.
