Elementary particle physics aims to give a consistent description of the elementary particles and their interactions. Experiments indicate the existence of four independent interactions: electromagnetic, weak, strong and gravitational. The first three interactions are described by the so-called 'standard model'. Gravitational interaction is described by Einstein's general relativity.
The aim of this project is to combine the standard model and general relativity into a new theory that gives a complete description of all interactions. A candidate theory that has attracted a lot of attention is superstring theory. Superstring theory assumes that particles manifest themselves as the different vibration modes of a stringlike structure.
Superstring theory is still at an early stage. Although many interesting results have been obtained, much work remains to be done to achieve the goal mentioned above. Surprisingly, superstring theory turns out to have many connections with other parts of theoretical physics and mathematics. The project will further investigate the properties of superstring theory and these connections to other disciplines. Specific research topics are integrable models, hadronic strings, W symmetries and twistor formulations of superstrings.
