TO DEVELOP COATING ON CUTTING AND FORMING TOOLS WITH IMPROVED PROPERTIES OF HARDNESS, ADHESION, WEAR RESISTANCE AND FRICTION, TO INCREASE TOOL LIFE AND REDUCE MACHINING COSTS.
THIS PROJECT WILL BE UNDERTAKEN IN THREE STAGES:
- IMPROVEMENT TO TOOLS BY A SINGLE SURFACE TREATMENT;
- OPTIMIZATION OF TOOL QUALITY BY COMBINED SURFACE TREATMENTS;
- OPERATIONAL TESTING OF TOOLS.
THE FIRST STAGE WILL INCLUDE PHYSICAL VAPOUR DEPOSITION (PVD), ION IMPLANTATION (II), LASER AND SURFACE SINTERING TECHNIQUES TO PRODUCE COATINGS OF NITRIDES, CARBIDES AND BORIDES AT THE CUTTING AND FORMING TOOL SURFACE.
DURING THE SECOND STAGE, VARIOUS TECHNIQUES USED IN THE FIRST STAGE WILL BE COMBINED, SUCH AS PVD PLUS II INCLUDING LASER ANNEALING, AND ION NITRIDING AND CARBURIZING TOGETHER WITH PVD AND LASER THERMAL TREATING, IN ATTEMPTS TO INCREASE THE EFFECTIVE DEPTHS OF THE SURFACE TREATMENTS. THE BEST METHODOLOGIES WILL BE STUDIED FURTHER BY NON-DESTRUCTIVE ANALYSES SUCH AS RUTHERFORD BACKCATTERING, NUCLEAR REACTION AND PARTICLE INDUCED X-RAY EMMISION ANALYSIS AND DESTRUCTIVE TECHNIQUES SUCH AS AUGER SPECTROMETRY AND OPTICAL AND ELECTRON MICROSCOPY.
STAGE 3 WILL INVOLVE THE PRODUCTION AND FIELD TESTING OF OPERATIONAL TOOLS. MICRO-HARDNESS, ADHESION, WEAR AND FRICTION TESTS WILL BE INCLUDED IN THIS STAGE.
COLLABORATION WILL TAKE PLACE WITH IRST (TRENTO, ITALY) IN THE ION IMPLANTATION TESTS AND THE UNIVERSITY OF PADUA (ITALY) FOR THE LASER TREATMENT STUDIES.
