Collective effects in highly excited states

Cel

Triply excited states in nitrogen ions have been considered in the presence and the absence of a core. Calculations for 3l3l'3l" states in nitrogen{4+} and nitrogen{2+} appear to show that the collective picture does not apply to the triply excited states. It has also been shown that it is not the triply excited states which decay by radiation, but the doubly excited states formed after the triply excitated states have decayed by autoionization. Calculations have also contributed to the understanding of stabilization for doubly excited states.

In experiments with neutralization of ions at surfaces multiply excited states can be formed. This is an important process in hot plasmas, such as those found in fusion processes, and has been considered using nitrogen as an example. The results have also been important in the discussion of the origin of the discrete spectrum observed in the neutralization process.

Calculations have also been performed on the filling of inner shells. Hollow atoms have been considered where most of the electrons are in the outer shells.
