The European Commission, DG XIV, has published an invitation to tender concerning the current possibilities to use SAR imagery (synthetic aperture radar) to detect fishing vessels and fishing activity.

The contract would have three main objectives:

- To determine the current possibilities of satellite-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to detect fishing activity;
- To assess the future capabilities of satellite-borne SAR to detect fishing activity;
- To provide an outline design of an operational system that would alert authorities to the presence of illegal fishing.

The contract would last for a period of 18 months.
